Alice Springs Day Tour

West Macdonnell Ranges

Alice Springs, the gateway to Australia’s Red Centre, is a key destination for travelers venturing to the world-renowned Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. However, many visitors overlook the stunning natural attractions located closer to Alice Springs, such as the East & West MacDonnell Ranges, Finke Gorge National Park and Palm Valley.

On the western end of the city, you’ll find the breathtaking West MacDonnell Ranges. A vast area with many gorges, waterholes where you can swim in the middle of the desert, hiking trails and a great variety of flora and fauna. With so much to see you have to be quite selective in where you decide to go. That’s why we’ve created a one-day itinerary so you don’t miss any of the highlights.

Start your day with a short walk at Simpsons Gap. This is a nice place for families and very easy to reach. The walk untill the waterhole takes just a few minutes during which you need to keep an eye peeled for the abundant wildlife. Next, head to aboriginal sacred Standley Chasm. One of the most striking spots in the region. A brief 30-minute hike leads you to the gorge, which is particularly spectacular when illuminated by the midday sun, making it an ideal time to visit. The next stop on the itinerary is Ellery Creek Big Hole. This is the best place for a refreshing swim during the early afternoon heath. Ormiston Gorge is probably the most picturesque gorge and also a great place to swim. Finally, end your day at Glen Helen Gorge, a stunning location that is particularly beautiful at sunset. It’s just a short walk from the Glen Helen Lodge and Campsite, where you can stay overnight if you choose to do so. If not, ensure you leave in time for the 90-minute drive back to Alice Springs.
