Wilsons Promontory
Day 1 - 24th of March
Finally, the day where we leave Melbourne ‘for good‘ has come. After our detour to The Grampians and The Great Ocean Road it’s time to start our Big Lap in east bound direction.
Our first stop is a good one: Wilsons Promontory. Hearing so many good things about this place we decided to stay here for 3 nights. Only campground where you can stay overnight in your vehicle here is Tidal River Campground which is the main hub of the national park. This is quite a big campground compared to the other Parks Victoria campsite we’ve stayed at and was very well equipped. It even had a small convenience store in case you’ve forgotten any essential camping equipment.
We left Melbourne around 7AM for the 3 hour drive to Wilsons Prom. We arrived at the main entrance of the national park around 9:30AM and continued the road for another 10 minutes untill we reached our first stop of the day: Prom Wildlife Walk. Our Wilsons Prom adventure started here with a short 40 minute walk where we could spot much of the local wildlife such as wombats, wallabies, emus, snakes, …
We soon continued the road towards the carpark for Fairy Cove. This was going to be a bit more challenging hike. The distance is only around 2,7km one way but will take you one hour to complete due to the many stairs on the hike. Return to the carpark is another hour of walking. Once we got back we had some lunch.
After lunch we continued our way to Whisky Bay and Picnic Bay which are just next to each other. We spent the rest of the day here and walked up to the viewpoint in between the two bays to enjoy the sunset.
Day 2 - 25th of March
We got up in the morning and started the hike up Mount Oberon from the Telegraph Saddle Car Park directly after breakfast. Total lenght of the hike is 6,5km and should take around 2,5 hours to complete. We spent the rest of the day at Norman Beach and Squeaky Beach and enjoyed the sunset from Pillar Point Lookout.
Day 3 - 26th of March
In the morning we’re walking up a peak again summiting Mount Bishop. This time relatively easier than the walk up Mount Oberon the previous morning as the summit should be reachin within an hour of walking. Another hour is needed to get back to the Lilly Pilly Gully carpark. In the afternoon we decided to walk up to Little Oberon Bay and spent the rest of the day there.
Day 4 - 27th of March
Today we’re wrapping things up in Wilsons Promontory. After waking up we’re packing everything up and get ready to go. Just before exiting the national park we stop by the Dunes of the Big Drift and the Little Drift. The latter is has the perfect lighting around sunrise! Once we’ve taken in the nice views from these sand dunes it’s time for us to leave the park and continue our road on to Tarra-Bulga National Park!
